A plastic tote is a great way to store and carry items to and from the communal showers. This keeps all items in one place and prevents leaving items behind. Do not forget a pair of flips flops for the showers and your robe!

With new friends and new experiences, comes much memorabilia. Think ahead and plan on one memorabilia box per school year. This limits all the paper and knick knacks you save- start off with a large shoe box, and if you must grow to a larger container, ok, but remember to limit it to one container.

Keeping track of classes, assignments, and campus events/dates seems daunting. Some colleges offer pocket calendars with preprinted campus dates. Definitely purchase one either from the college or a generic one from an office supplies store. After getting syllabuses from your professors, take time to enter in all assignment due dates.

Paper during college will soon pile up if it is not contained. Here are two ideas- create a labeled binder for each course which would contain pockets, sheet protectors, and blank paper. Three-hole punch incoming paper and add it to the corresponding course. OR get one 2 inch binder that will contain all courses. Separate courses by insertable labeled index dividers. Include blank paper and sheet protectors as well.

Christmas lights are a fun, yet cheap way to dress up and decorate a dorm room. Do not forget a strand of two while packing, along with adhesive hooks to hang them.

“Our women’s ministry group is holding a craft fair in the fellowship hall on Sunday afternoon,” my sister said. It was just one week before Christmas and although I had finished my shopping, the event sounded like fun.

Walking slowly into the crowded room, I attempted to follow the left aisle. Scanning crafts, prices, and people, I saw an open path and immediately walked toward the opposite side of the room.

Crocheted dish towels, cookbooks, customized pillowcases and baked goods are just a few of the items I saw that day. After scanning the entire room, I returned to my three favorite exhibits.

The first exhibit was a home baked persimmon pudding. I’ve been told this dessert is either loved or not. Since it’s only available in the fall season of the year, I knew this was my opportunity to taste a dessert I loved, one my mom had baked when I was a child. Purchase one completed.

The second exhibit was handcrafted pillow cases. Colors exploded and the custom designs temporarily mesmerized me. When my eyes landed on the purple and green set of pillowcases, it felt like I had found a tangible moment of tranquility. Purchase two completed.

The third exhibit was a combination of baked goods and miniature containers. Glancing at the display, I saw two miniature plastic bags inside a coffee mug, one contained a dry chocolate powder and the second contained a dry white powder. Directions to mix the contents in the cup were listed on the label affixed to the mug. It was something I hadn’t seen before and yet it reminded me of the miniature bake ovens popular with kids several years ago but this was an adult sized coffee mug. Purchase three completed.

Creativity of the exhibitors amazed me. In that simple Sunday afternoon event I had the opportunity to remember the love of my mom and dad, as well as explore new ideas that taught me ways to prepare things I hadn’t even considered.

When I looked at the calendar yesterday morning, an italicized quotation caught my eye. “Our minds are like parachutes; they work best when open.”

Electric furnaces run the most efficiently. No electricity or energy is lost in turning energy into heat. However, using electricity is not as environmentally friendly as it may sound. Your electricity may be generated at a coal-burning power plant. Furthermore, an electric furnace requires the use of a heat pump, which can be very costly to have installed and electric heat pumps have a tendency to need replacement sooner than their natural gas or oil counterparts.

Wood is always an option, and for many older homes or homes in largely wooded areas, wood is the first source of heat. While wood is the cheapest heating option, it is not always best. Wood smoke can be dangerous if it is leaked into your home. Installing a high-efficiency wood burning stove or fireplace will ensure that you are safe from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide. However, modern wood burning units are very expensive, not to mention the cost of wood or the time spent chopping wood. You’ll also need plenty of space to store your wood to be sure you have enough for the cold season.

A well insulated home will block out the cold air and keep your heat inside longer. Be sure to set your thermostat at a comfortable temperature without having to over run your furnace.
